Award-winning Osborne Electrician Urges Women to up Tools

Osborne’s award-winning female electrician Dion Martin has chosen International Women’s Day to urge more women to join the profession.

Speaking out about the lack of women working in trades, Dion, 38, said working as an electrician was empowering and rewarding.

She added that female electricians enhanced customer service since they were valued by customers, who felt uncomfortable inviting male operatives into their homes.

In November Osborne awarded Dion, who joined the firm in 2014, a Customer Service Champion of Champions award for going ‘above and beyond’ in her day-to-day work. This included running to the shops to buy a panicking elderly customer a new phone to replace her broken landline and returning in time to complete the electrics job within the allotted time slot.

In 2009 mother-of-one Dion was named electrical installation student of the year by Bromley College, where she trained.
Dion said: “My advice to any women thinking of training as an electrician is don’t get put off – even if you have children. Keep focused. It will be the proudest thing you’ve ever done and the most rewarding. I feel empowered now – I won’t ever have to call anyone out to do my electrics!”
