Osborne cranes in new footbridge at Streatham

27 April 2009

A new footbridge being craned in at Streatham Hill StationA new footbridge along with one lift shaft has been craned in at Streatham Hill Station in south London over a weekend possession.  Osborne undertook the works as part of the Government’s Access for All programme being delivered by Network Rail.

Using a 500-tonne crane positioned on a purpose built raft projecting from the adjacent road, Osborne lifted the 30-tonne, 22-metre bridge span and 4.5-tonne lift shaft into place between platform 1 and 2.

The project presented a number of challenges, largely due to the position of the station, which is in a cutting six metres below road level.  Thorough planning enabled a solution to be found, traffic to be managed and disruption to members of the public to be kept to a minimum.

Project manager at Osborne, Chris Hudson, said: “Three months of planning and intensive site works in preparation for the craning in of the replacement bridge and lift shaft ensured the project went smoothly.”

Osborne is currently undertaking DDA compliance work on behalf of Network Rail at a number of stations, including Lewisham, Twyford, Fareham, Fratton, Clapham Junction, and Southampton.  The company has already completed DDA work at Herne Hill and Kingston.
