Osborne was appointed in 2007 to construct a new 2400m2 research and teaching facility for the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine - one of the highest rated research institutions in the UK. The school is situated in the Bloomsbury Conservation Area and is a Grade II listed building.
The new building houses a new courtyard, lecture theatres, teaching and research facilities; and a double storey height 270-seat auditorium.
The main challenge on this project was the restricted access for both operatives and materials. A tower crane had to lift the majority of materials over the existing, occupied School building.
The project also included the reinstatement and restoration of the original entrance foyer. This allows users of the building to progress from the main entrance into the new central courtyard space.
Open-loop geothermal boreholes are being utilised along with chilled beams and photovoltaic arrays to provide heating and cooling . The scheme is on course to achieve the desired Very Good BREEAM rating.
The South Courtyard building was officially opened on the 19 May 2009 by HRH The Princess Royal.
