Watford gets off to a bang

Medicinq Osborne has been awarded the contract to construct a £25m ProCure21 project for a new Acute Admissions Medicinq OsborneUnit (AAU) at Watford General Hospital.

Due for completion this summer, the scheme for West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust forms part of a £34m reorganisation and modernisation of acute services in the area. It is designed to improve the patient experience with rapid, consultant-led diagnosis for emergency cases.

The AAU, which is believed to be the largest in the country, will comprise a three-storey building providing 120 beds for emergency admissions, two cardiac catheterisation laboratories, diagnostics including x-ray, ultrasound and CT scanner, pharmacy manufacture and robotics, library and a roof-top plant room.

Local MP Claire Ward helped get the scheme off with a bang by helping demolish the old Postgraduate Medical Centre. The Postgraduate Centre is moving to a larger, modern Medical Education Centre on the Watford General site.

Watford MP Clare WardClaire Ward said, "I am pleased to be here to witness this major milestone in what is a fantastic development. I have consistently campaigned for a better hospital and improved services for local people. This is the first step that will go on to build a better and brighter future."

The building is being manufactured off site and the steel-framed modules will be delivered and craned into position in the Spring, complete with partitions, electrics, plumbing, sanitary ware and finishes already in place, significantly reducing the disruption to patients, staff and the local community during construction.

Key Facts

  • The AAU will be open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year
  • The building is being manufactured in a controlled factory environment while the foundations are progressed on site
