Transport - Airports

"Airport operators want construction work to be carried out as quickly and safely as possible with minimum disruption to the travelling public. " Bobby Vijay, Key Account Manager, Construction

In 2008 airports operator BAA appointed Osborne as one of five commodity build framework contractors, carrying out projects valued at between £2 million and £30 million. The framework covers civil engineering, construction, property services and rail related work across BAA’s airports in south east England. Our work is currently concentrated at Gatwick and Heathrow airports.

Osbone has undertaken refurbishment work at five Gatwick car parksAt the time of the award we were aware that we were unique among the framework contractors in that we can provide all of the services that the framework covers. In the first year of the five-year framework, the client has shown that it values our civil engineering expertise by awarding a series of projects that make use of these skills.

We have undertaken the refurbishment of five surface level car parks at Gatwick, with a value of £2.1 million. The projects involved complete resurfacing, drainage, road marking, signage, lighting and the construction of new bus shelters at each of the sites.

The first car park contract was tendered in competition with the other commodity build contractors, but subsequent projects were awarded through direct negotiation. This shows the benefit of operating a true framework arrangement, as we have proved that we are competitive on price, and have also demonstrated our ability to deliver a quality service that is recognised by the client.

Improving the passenger experience at Gatwick AirportIn addition to these schemes we have been awarded a £1 million contract to build a link road that will join the A23 trunk road to the airport perimeter road at Gatwick. The project includes major service diversions and construction of a new section of road that, when complete, will avoid the need for airport traffic having to run beneath the South Terminal.

We hope that the success of the projects we have carried out so far will result in Osborne winning a substantial proportion of the £80 million of landside civil engineering work due to be let at Heathrow during the lifetime of the framework, as well as projects in other disciplines such as buildings, structures and M&E work. We have the experience to deliver a wide variety of projects, and are also familiar with handling complex interfaces between different types of work.

Osborne was successful at the end of 2008 in winning the project to re-surface our South Terminal long-term car park. Osborne has since worked well with Gatwick Airport to develop the best value solution that has improved the quality of the long-term car park, and the Osborne team at Gatwick has successfully achieved the goal of delivering a good quality product while minimising the disruption to our passengers. Osborne is an important part of our commodity build framework and we look forward to working with the team again on future opportunities within the Gatwick Capital Plan.
