Using a 500-tonnes crane, Osborne, as part of their Step Free Access Framework with Network Rail, installed three lift shafts at Clapham Junction Station in just four days over the Christmas holiday. The new lifts, which will total nine on completion of the entire project, will provide much needed step free access at the station.
Precast concrete panels eight metres high, three metres wide and 14 tonnes in weight were lifted across up to six sets of tracks and put into place complete with joins and caps. At the same time, 18 Number 300-450mm piles were put 15 metres into separate platforms in readiness for a new overbridge extension, which will be installed at a later date.
In preparation for this work, Osborne saw that Balfour Beatty had possession of the railway to replace the track ladder on the Windsor to London line. Balfour Beatty gave permission to Osborne to carry out its work at the same time, the collaboration allowing the project to be delivered continuously and quickly.
Senior site manager Bruce Williams said: “The alternative was to work in short time slots at night and at the weekend, which would have meant a project duration of anything up to 12 weeks, as well as additional works to temporarily prop up the structures. We had 40 persons working across 10 of the stations 17 platforms, with the remaining platforms open to the public”. Network Rail, Balfour Beatty and Osborne demonstrated that by working together they could deliver maximum efficiencies and also minimise the impact on the travelling public.”
