Health & Safety

"There is nothing so urgent or important in Osborne that it cannot be done safely." Peter Robertshaw, Director of Safety

Two safety consultants talkingHealth and Safety is of primary importance in Osborne. As the company grows, it is vital that we have systems, reporting procedures and communication methods that support safe ways of working.

We have a safety management system that is accredited by the BSi as meeting the nationally recognised OHSAS 18001 standard, backed up by our own “Safety Matters” manual that directs and guides employees through all our safety procedures.

In the past year we undertook 1,527 days of safety training for our own staff and operatives and our subcontractors. These included a new “Managing Safely” programme that is being rolled out for all management staff and a two-day course for senior management to ensure they set the standard for safety leadership.

We now employ a driver assessor and organise training for every employee and subcontractor who drives a company vehicle. In the past year 220 people have been assessed under this scheme, 28 of whom were given further training.

RoSPA AwardsWe constantly monitor our accident frequency record, which is below the industry average. We have an upgraded PPE policy which includes hand and eye protection form everyone working on – or visiting – an Osborne site. Compliance of this policy is resulting in a downturn of injuries to hands and eyes.

Our safety culture is reinforced by training, safety updates, quizzes, awards and auditing, and is regularly recognised by Gold Awards and Gold Medals from RoSPA.

In the 2007 RoSPA Health and Safety Awards we achieved three Gold Medals, two Gold Awards and two Silver Awards. Osborne also entered the RoSPA MORR (Managing Occupational Road Risk) Awards for the first time and our commitment to the management of road risk was recognised with a Silver Award in all Divisions. We have also been assessed and approved by CHAS (Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme), which can be checked on their website www.chas.gov.uk/.

Our Midlands and Southern Division (Collectively now know as the Civil Engineering Business) each won a Gold Medal, Building and London Division (both now part of the Construction Business) achieved a Gold Medal and Gold Award respectively, Maintenance Division (now Osborne Property Services) was recognised with a Gold Award, whilst the Homes Business and Group won Silver Awards.
