"There is nothing so urgent or important in Osborne that it cannot be done safely." Peter Robertshaw, Director of Safety
Health and Safety is of primary importance in Osborne. As the company grows, it is vital that we have systems, reporting procedures and communication methods that support safe ways of working.
We have a safety management system that is accredited by the BSi as meeting the nationally recognised OHSAS 18001 standard, backed up by our own “Safety Matters” manual that directs and guides employees through all our safety procedures.
In the past year we undertook 1,928 days of safety training for our own staff and operatives and our subcontractors. These include an IOSH accredited "Managing Safely" programme that is being rolled out for all management staff and a two-day course for senior management to ensure they set the standard for safety leadership.
We employ a driver assessor and organise training for every employee who drives a company vehicle. In the past year 337 people have been assessed under this scheme. Our commitment to road safety has led to a strong driver training programme recognised by the RoSPA MORR Awards. In the 2008 RoSPA MORR Awards we achieved one Gold Award and four Silver Awards. The Gold was awarded to Osborne's Property Services Division while the Silver was awarded to the Homes, Construction and Civil Engineering Division and Osborne as a whole.
We constantly monitor our accident frequency record, which is below the industry average. We have an upgraded PPE policy which includes hand and eye protection for everyone working on - or visiting - an Osborne site. Compliance of this policy is resulting in a downturn of injuries to hands and eyes.
Our safety culture is reinforced by training, safety updates, quizzes, awards and auditing, and is regularly recognised by Gold Awards and Gold Medals from RoSPA.
In the 2009 RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards we achieved three Gold medals and four Gold awards. The medals were awarded to Osborne’s Civil Engineering, Property Services and Construction divisions, while the Gold awards went to the Homes and Rail divisions with another going to the Osborne Group as a whole. Osborne’s Rail division also won another Gold award for its work on the Network Rail Operational Property Framework South contract. This year's medals and awards mark the sixteenth consecutive year that Osborne's safety standards have been recognised by the RoSPA Awards scheme.
