Local People, Local Jobs
“We deliver great services through employing local people who are part of our clients’ and customers’ communities. By offering training, career progression opportunities, and great benefits, we maintain a 90% local employment base. We always recruit locally, providing employment opportunities, as well as work experience, training and apprenticeships to give back and leave a lasting legacy.” Carol Bailey, Managing Director, Property Services
We deliver better services and greater satisfaction levels for clients and customers through a local employment base, which is linked to our wider approach on community investment. We have a joined up approach to recruitment and creation of new job opportunities, as well as the training and promotion of work experience placements. We achieve this by creating contract specific plans which target our clients’ own customer base as well as individuals from within their local communities. This creates win-win outcomes which give back more by contributing to local employment and economies, delivering better services using local staff and supporting our clients in meeting their obligations under the Social Value Act 2013.
By focusing on training and development, we constantly grow the capabilities of our staff by moving them into new roles whilst recruiting for new vacancies, ideally at entry up to mid-management level from the local community. Each of our own staff receives a minimum of 5 days training per annum which is tailored through their personal development plans to ensure they have the knowledge, skills and abilities to succeed in their jobs, but also to progress their careers at Osborne. All of our local employment outputs, including apprenticeships and work placements, are mapped out and managed using a contract specific community investment plan which provides us with a structured approach to deliver on our commitments.
It’s this approach that has helped us deliver high levels of customer satisfaction, but also retain the high calibre, local staff who share not only our own, but our clients’ vision for service excellence, whilst investing in local communities to deliver sustainable future success.
“Everything that we do at Osborne is about giving more back to local people. Through a focused approach to community investment, we are actively making a difference that will change the future of local individuals by offering work experience and training opportunities as well as delivering community investment projects. We are on the ground, helping and investing locally where it’s needed the most.” Carol Bailey, Managing Director, Property Services.
To support the delivery of long-term community investment, we carry out supporting activities to help our clients deliver their commitments under the Social Value Act to improve the social, economic and environmental wellbeing of their customers and communities. Beyond our daily community activities, each staff member is given a development day to use in local community and charity activities. We utilise a social value framework which is based on the British Standards (ISO 26000) for Social Responsibility and includes our Community Investment Policy, Goals & Strategies and Action Plan structure. The framework comprises 7 areas: community involvement, social investment, education and culture, employment and skills, health, wealth and income creation, and technology.
You can read all about what we do in Community Matters, published quarterly and available on this website.
For our long-term partnerships, we utilise this framework to create a contract specific Legacy Plan for each of our clients to support long term investment aligned to their wider strategic priorities. These plans are created in collaboration with our clients and their customers, to ensure that the initiatives we deliver are relevant and will target investment into the right places. On long-term partnerships, we have a significant opportunity to create positive impacts by adding lasting value at a local and individual level. In our view, this is focussed around the things we will do which go the extra mile to make a tangible difference in peoples lives as well as in local communities.
Each Legacy Plan specifically details out our commitments and the benefits we will deliver so that we can measure the success of our approach. We refresh the plans at a minimum annually with clients and customers to ensure that they remain relevant and follow best practice guidance. We believe that community investment should not be ad hoc but planned in a structured way with clients and customers to ensure that it delivers maximum benefits for everyone.
Leaving A Legacy
Our long term partnerships afford the greatest opportunity to make a tangible difference in the lives of local people and communities. Helping people and communities grow and positively change is achieved through ongoing skills investment, training, and employment support. Everything we do in respect of community investment is about leaving a lasting legacy which provides the foundation for future success.
For every partnership we undertake, we work collaboratively with our clients and customers to determine the right type of social value and community investment initiatives which will make a difference and support them by leaving a lasting legacy. We then plan a series of ongoing community investment activities and initiatives to help increase opportunities for training, employment, skills investment, as well as community regeneration projects or collaborative partnerships with third sector organisations to drive increased social value.
On our long term contracts, these initiatives are developed more fully into a strategic community investment plan which is aligned to our training, recruitment, and supply chain plans for the contract, so that we maximise value for our clients in respect of employment, the environment, and local economies. We plan for and deliver these initiatives jointly with clients, as we understand that we make a bigger impact by doing more together.
Over a 10 or 15 year contract term, like in our partnerships with Dacorum Borough Council and Ascham Homes, we take a strategic approach to investment to maximise the impacts we will achieve. It also lets us look holistically at everything that we are doing, asking the question: “Is what we are doing making a long term difference?” By taking this approach, we ensure that everything we do will leave a tangible lasting legacy in both individuals’ lives and in the communities where we work.
