David Exford – Assistant Quantity Surveyor
“Like so many other people, I left school at 16 with very little idea of what I wanted to do. My family worked in Construction so this seemed like a natural fit for me.
When I first joined Osborne 5 years ago as a Trainee (I was only 17!), I really just wanted to focus on Quantity Surveying. I’m so glad I didn’t – I was encouraged to try out all of the departments across Construction such as Site Management, Estimating, as well as Quantity Surveying. I gained a lot of new skills and broadened my insight into the industry.
The biggest thing for me was that I really wanted to study and gain my professional qualifications, but at the same time I didn’t want to lose that experience of being on site. Osborne has been really helpful with this flexibility – having gained my qualifications from college, I’m currently on day release for my university degree in Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management so I can train and work at the same time.
I’m now an Assistant Quantity Surveyor and really enjoying the new opportunities it brings – no day is the same here and I don’t feel static. I can talk openly with my manager about my aspirations for the future. I love being thrown into new challenges – I remember working on my first solo project at Purley Oaks Primary School when I was just 19 years old. Even though it was hard work and seemed daunting at first, it was a fantastic experience and I learnt so much that I didn’t think I would at such a young age.”
I’ve even started mentoring my own Trainee, which is quite strange as that was me just a couple of years ago!
