Mayflower Halls development reaches final stages

The development of Mayflower Halls has reached the final phase and works are underway to connect up services (gas, water, electricity etc) to the new building and finish off the surrounding pavements ready for the opening.

Whilst these works are being carried out, Commercial Road will need to be narrowed and will become one way (outbound only) to provide the space to access services under the road and to complete the paving works. This work will be carried out from 6 May and is anticipated to take six weeks.

This will create a one way traffic loop, with inbound traffic diverted around to Blechynden Terrace and West Park Road. The traffic signals at the junction with Havelock Road will also be changed to give inbound traffic more priority and to allow north, south and east travel into the city centre.

During busy periods there may be some delays and the council is working closely with the Mayflower Halls developer, Osborne, to minimise these. Motorists are asked to take special care and observe the traffic signs.

This is an important development for the Southampton as it means growth for the University which will also significantly contribute to the city’s growth. The Mayflower Halls development will also help to reduce the pressure on private housing within Southampton.
