Osborne and Essex County Council Work Together to Improve Journey Times

Reduced journey times and improved access to Basildon Hospital for ambulances are just two of the benefits of improvements to the A176 Nether Mayne in Basildon, a busy link between the A13, Basildon Town Centre and Basildon Enterprise Corridor along the A127.

Osborne begin work in September to create an additional northbound lane for vehicles travelling between the Basildon Hospital roundabout to the junction with Ashdon Way, and two lanes in both directions under the railway bridge up to the junction with Roundacre Roundabout.

In addition the crossing near to the school will be moved south towards the hospital roundabout to enable the carriageway to be widened, and to provide a wider waiting area for pedestrians and cyclists.

County Councillor Rodney L Bass, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transportation, said: “These important improvements will reduce journey times northbound on a road carrying over 25,000 vehicles per day. They will also provide a wider lane southbound to enable emergency vehicles going to the hospital to pass traffic. The road will not be closed during the works but some delays should be expected. Drivers should find alternative routes and allow extra time for journeys. Access for emergency vehicles and hospital visitors will be maintained at all times.”

The scheme is being financed through the Government’s Local Pinch Point Fund, announced by the Government in 2012 to remove bottlenecks on local roads which are impacting on economic growth.

In addition to the Pinch Point scheme, Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust will install traffic lights on the northbound approach to the hospital roundabout from the A13 to enable vehicles leaving the hospital to enter the roundabout.
