Osborne’s One Team Wessex Complete First Bridge Replacement

The “One Team Wessex” team mobilised over 180 people to work round the clock last weekend to successfully replace a Victorian underbridge on the Waterloo to Bournemouth mainline at Aldershot. This is the first of many underbridges scheduled to be replaced by this collaborative framework.

Replacement of the Aldershot Intersection Bridge saw the old bridge removed and replaced with two 48 tonne steel bridge decks to allow the existing weight restriction to be removed, allowing the unhindered passage of both freight and passenger trains.

Constraints at the site meant that the team had to use one of the largest mobile cranes in the country, with a capacity of 1000 tonnes, to position the decks from a distance of 40 metres. The operation was meticulously planned and made use of an animated 3D model to enable the team to visualise the complex sequence of events.
