The Osborne Scholarship: an Investment in the Future

Following its successful launch last year, Osborne is once again investing in the future generations and the future of the construction industry, with the award of a £9,000 scholarship to a student at the University of Greenwich.

This year’s recipient is Kelly Hughes, who is currently studying for a MEng in Civil Engineering. Kelly met recently with members of the Osborne Construction team to find out more about the business and what it is like working in the industry.

The scholarship is available for students who are studying on a course that is relevant to Osborne. Each student who applies for the scholarship has to meet a minimum academic standard and write a short paper – both set by the University – as well as submit a statement about what the award will mean to them. Kelly was chosen as a result of her strong determination and continuous commitment to her studies. She has been one of the first students to study in the new Stockwell Street development which Osborne completed for the University of Greenwich last autumn.

Kelly explained: “The Osborne Scholarship has completely transformed my university life. Rather than worrying about upholding a part time job to support my education as a mature student, I have been able to put all my efforts into my studies, and my achievements this year have been amazing as a result of this. As well as the financial support I have received, I have had the chance to meet key members of Osborne’s team who have offered me as much support as possible throughout my studies, and for this I am extremely grateful.”

John Craig, Managing Director of Construction at Osborne, added: “We are delighted to be sponsoring Kelly for her year at university. Her submission for the scholarship was outstanding. We wish Kelly all the very best with her studies and look forward to seeing how she progresses.”

Congratulating Kelly on her achievement, Professor Simeon Keates, Deputy Pro Vice Chancellor in the Faculty of Engineering & Science, says: “At Greenwich we are proud of our relationships with premier construction and engineering companies, such as Osborne.

“These links give our students access to the current and best thinking in their industry as well as the opportunities to apply for scholarships and placements. We consider good relationships with industry a vital part of engineering education.”
