Collaborative Safety Leadership reaches new heights on the M4

Over 260,000 RIDDOR free hours whilst installing 4500 strengthening bars at height and ahead of programme, speak volumes for the collaborative approach to safety leadership on the M4 Elevated project.

From the outset it was recognised that safety performance and business performance go hand-in-hand and together Highways England, Connect Plus, Connect Plus Services, Osborne and their supply chain partners embraced this ethos to ensure the safe and successful delivery of this logistically and technically challenging project.  Key to achieving this impressive safety record was the “STOP Think! Programme”.

Attended by all, customers and suppliers alike, this programme focuses on exploring what lays at the very heart of safety and safety leadership; helping people to think differently, and instinctively make better decisions to keep everybody safe.

Clive Cooper, Highways England Service delivery team leader said: “My sincere thanks to all who have contributed to 260,000+ RIDDOR free hours on this job. To have achieved this level of progress without doing it safely, would have been a very hollow victory.”

Jamie Harrison, Customer Programme Manager for Osborne: “We are delighted that the STOP Think! Programme has been so warmly embraced by Highways England, Connect Plus, Connect Plus Services and our suppliers.  We strongly believe that it has influenced the safe and effective delivery of this project. “The STOP Think! Programme encouraged people to collaborate, think differently and make more rounded decisions on safety and other aspects of the delivery.  The success of this project has made us even more determined to adopt this approach on all our projects.”
