Supporting a Community Hero

Osborne were delighted to offer a green fingered community hero a helping hand after hearing of his gardening project at Longfield House Sheltered Scheme in Waltham Forest.

65 year-old Stephen Szatan, who does not allow mobility issues to get in the way of his passion for the great outdoors, has been tending to two large garden areas for the past two years, making them a bright and pleasant space for residents.

Funded by Stephen himself, and a small lottery grant, he grows a wide range of fruit and vegetable produce from potatoes, carrots and onions to strawberries, apples and pears, which he shares amongst the community, encouraging healthy eating.

After hearing his story and meeting him at a local disability forum, our Community Investment Manager, Neal Allison, was only too pleased to assist Stephen with installing a raised step for easier access between growing areas and preparing ground and planters.

Stephen, who was very grateful for the help, said: “I enjoy gardening and making the outdoor area look nice for others. Residents love to walk past the garden and say it brightens up their day.”
