University Challenge

Building bridges is something Osborne do regularly in the UK, but recently, Joshua Mason, an undergraduate engineer at Osborne crossed the channel to build bridges between Universities.

Taking part in the 2018 Enise Bridge Challenge, in France and representing the University of Portsmouth, Joshua and his team took part in this international competition for engineering students.

The challenge was, to use a limited range of materials to construct a bridge, spanning a 1.5 metre gap and to hold as much load as possible. Students are able to design the bridge beforehand, but must construct their bridge within a 9 hour period on the day.

Once testing has finished, Joshua and his teams bridge came 3rd out of 26 entries, holding a very respectable 215kg- a record for the University of Portsmouth and was only narrowly pipped by 2nd place.

Teams consisted  of 2-4 people, open to students from architecture and civil engineering schools.

Joshua said: “Overall, this was a very good experience to work with engineering students from across Europe and receive feedback from both academics and those in the industry.”
