Virtual is a Reality at Osborne

The Infrastructure Romsey Road Bridge Replacement team at Osborne, recently carried out a public engagement session with the local residents to discuss the proposed traffic management and road closures that would affect them.

As part of these sessions, in partnership with 3DRepo, a Virtual Reality (VR) environment was set up to allow the public to virtually view how this proposed traffic management system would work.

Recently, Osborne held a session at their head office in Reigate, so those who were interested in VR could take part and could learn more about the bridge replacement scheme and the benefits of this innovative technology.

Osborne also held a session for Network Rail to demonstrate how the system can be used to visualise the proposed changes to Feltham Station as part of the platform extension and level crossing removal design.

Dominic Lowry is the Technology Improvement Manager at Osborne and he said:
“Whilst Virtual Reality in its current form is primarily a gaming technology, the opportunities in our industry are immense. The ability to immerse a customer, stakeholder or employee in the project before works have begun, gives them a much greater understanding of the task to be completed and what we will be delivering. We will be working with our supply chain partners to promote new ways of visualising buried services, training around construction plant and other safety training ideas as part of embracing this new technology on our projects.”

Osborne also used the opportunity to share ideas on emerging technology and how this could be used in the company and beyond!
