Sharing our Success Stories: Innovation in Action at Osborne Infrastructure

The Osborne team is always looking for innovative ways to help our customers achieve more while keeping disruption for infrastructure users to a minimum. A few examples from recent projects show how this approach works in practice.

Innovative GPR Tunnel Surveying

In preparation for tunnel improvement works we teamed up with SRS to develop bespoke equipment for carrying out GPR surveys efficiently and safely. The innovative unit is secured to the forks of an RRV. The equipment is fully adjustable so that the profile can be adjusted to suit the tunnel crown. It has springs and a plate to prevent damage.

The technique is safer and more efficient than using a Mobile Elevated Work Platform (MEWP) with someone holding the GPR box. A comprehensive and detailed survey of the condition of a tunnel can be carried out rapidly with minimum safety risk. This will provide major benefits to asset operators and users.

Safe and Rapid Ballast Removal

Refurbishment of bridges and other elements often involves the removal of large quantities of ballast so that detailed inspections of hidden elements can take place. Ballast removal can be labour intensive and can also risk damage to buried services.

When Osborne installed ballast boards in advance of complex bridge refurbishment works at Vauxhall Station the ballast removal issue was resolved with a ballast vacuum attached to an RRV.

This highly efficient solution accelerated inspection and test operations while eliminating any risk of damaging services or hidden structural elements. The complex refurbishment scheme of repairs, coatings and a new deck to Bridge 6 will begin in summer 2018.

UHP Jetting Makes Light Work of Bridge Cleaning

UHP jetting is a powerful and environmentally sensitive cleaning method. Osborne recently invited the Bridge Team from Hertfordshire CC to see it in action at Gade Valley. Seeing the technique being used enabled the team to evaluate how it could benefit other bridge schemes.

Our learning culture is all about sharing the experiences and benefits of innovation with our partners. These examples serve to show how we always aim to apply innovative methods to deliver greater value and improve the experience, both for our customers and asset users.

Virtual Reality Headsets Increase Public Engagement

Osborne in partnership with Highways England, WSP and 3DRepo set up a Virtual Reality environment as part of a public information day at M27/A3057 Romsey Bridge.  In conjunction with traffic management information a state of the art visual walk through was used to demonstrate the completed structure.  It was a huge success as members of the public virtually crossed the bridge and jumped down onto the M27 to view from the road.

The possibilities for VR technology are endless.  By importing the 3D GPR surveys into the BIM model a machine operator could use a VR headset to see the services in the ground before they go out to excavate!

Our learning culture is all about sharing the experiences and benefits of innovation with our partners. These examples serve to show how we always aim to apply innovative methods to deliver greater value and improve the experience, both for our customers and asset users.
