From School to Site

What started as a site tour for West Hertfordshire College, inspired two local students to begin their journey into the Construction industry.

William Stubbs and Henry Barkas, BTEC Level 3 Civil Engineering Level students, applied for a placement at the Gade Valley Viaduct Site to gain valuable onsite experience.

For six weeks they spent two days per week onsite; setting out, learning skills about BIM models and shadowing Osborne personnel as well as subcontractors, giving them a hands-on experience of life within the industry.

Following a successful placement the both students received an offer to join Osborne on a HNC based apprenticeship.

Joshua Mason (Undergraduate Engineer) commended their work on site saying;  “They were keen to learn and constantly pushed to undertake more tasks. While teaching them ‘setting out’ with the dumpy level ( a piece of levelling equipment) they were keen for a challenge, surveying the footpath with an accuracy of 2mm. Overall it was a great experience to mentor the students and it’s great to see Osborne promoting apprenticeships, an option into the industry that isn’t always made clear by schools.”

Having now completed their exams and accepted the official offer made by Osborne, we congratulate them and welcome their enthusiasm for the industry.
