M27 at Romsey Re-opens Ahead of Schedule

The M27 between junctions 3 and 4 at Romsey has fully reopened in both directions.

The motorway was scheduled to reopen at 5am on Monday morning but reopened 16 hours early.

This follows a weekend closure of the M27 where Osborne, along side supply chain partners demolished the western half of the Romsey Road Bridge.

Highways England project manager Andrew Winson said: “We are pleased to say that the demolition of the western part of the Romsey Road Bridge was completed ahead of schedule, so the M27 has opened earlier than expected. I would like to thank road users, residents and businesses in the area and along the diversion route for their patience while we carried out this important work.”

Matthew Whale, Senior Site Manager at Osborne said; “After weeks of planning, and working in collaboration with Highways England, stakeholders and our supply chain partners, we have achieved the first big milestone, ahead of time.  We handed back  the M27 motorway and A3057 sooner than programmed which  minimised disruption to the public. It could well be the first time in Highways that a road bridge has been demolished next to another which has remained in use and been handed back fit for use.”

The project team will now begin building the new bridge deck at the site compound near the M27.

The next weekend closure, to install the new bridge deck, will be between 26 – 29 April 2019.
