Opportunity still Knocks!

“I think we can all agree that things seem a little uncertain at the moment. One thing this industry likes is certainty- but the fear of what Brexit may bring, isn’t allowing us to feel that certainty.
I have talked a lot in the past about the importance of trust. Trust is part of any good relationship – Customers, Contractors and of course the supply chain. Perhaps one of our focus areas should be about looking at issues in the industry and ensuring trust remains central to any relationship.

Collaboration and engagement play a bit part.  We also need to look at the ever growing skills gap and the span of diverse skills needed to bring benefits to our industry. Technology and the ability to innovate will also play a big part.  I think that people are looking at sustainable and longer term when they are joining a company- somewhere that equals their values. Of course, we need to continue to deliver our projects with the highest focus on safety and quality.

Then there is Brexit. How this will play out is still unknown. Britain’s exit from the EU will soon be here and the three month gap, sadly breeds the unknown. The unknown and uncertainly doesn’t help stabilize too much in our industry.

That said, with any change, comes opportunity and I believe these opportunities, for all of us, are vast.

At Osborne, we are looking forward to being instrumental in Network Rail’s CP6 spend and working with Highways England to name a couple. Outside of Osborne, movement on the nuclear power station, Hinkley Point C should see some traction and HS2 is also climbing the agenda.

It may not seem like we are in a position to take a long term view, but if we are to help create a sustainable industry and to thrive instead of just survive, we may need to open the door to the opportunities which are knocking.”

Mike Todd, Lead Business Development Manager for Infrastructure at Osborne.
