Bringing work to life for a local student in Arun

Most recently we offered sixth form student Billy, from Bohunt School in Arun, a work experience placement. Billy aims to further qualify in engineering, so this offered invaluable hands-on industry experience.
Work experience placements are treated as new employees and as such the employee experience starts with a comprehensive induction validating our values, culture and customer expectations. The placement was mapped to provide a journey of touchpoints from bid writing through to award win, mobilisation and delivery of works. In the Osborne site office Billy spent time the bid team understanding the bid process and the evidence often required of our delivery teams to support a successful bid. While working with the Arun District Council Repairs team, Billy gained a variety of experience such as accompanying an Operative on a repair call out and spending time with the Osborne void property supervisor completing void inspections.
Billy commented: ‘The work experience placement provided me with valuable insight into a working environment. I developed qualities such as punctuality, communication skills, and customer engagement. The experience with Osborne offered an introduction to multiple different trades such as plumbing, carpentry, and plastering; as well as work in an office where I learned about bid writing and quantity surveying. My biggest take-away from the experience was the time and conversations dedicated to my future career options, which shaped what I want to do with my education and working life.’
