Sunny Sunflower competition for local sheltered scheme

In partnership with Winchester City Council, Osbourne Property Services organised a sunflower growing competition with residents from a local sheltered scheme. This lively group meet regularly in their communal lounge to share stories, activities, and laughter over a coffee.

Everyone in attendance enjoyed the warm, summer weather at the event. Starting from a sunflower seed, over a period of weeks, the group came together to nurture and encourage their flowers to grow tall.  One of the green fingered team was a lady who was celebrating her 90th birthday, a wonderful occasion to share alongside the competition, whilst also claiming first prize for the ‘Tallest Sunflower’.  Other winning categories included the prettiest, specialist, and best effort. All winners received large chocolate medals, a framed certificate, and a trophy to mark their efforts.

Sarah Turpitt, Sheltered and Extra Care Services Manager:

“Thank you to Osbourne Property Services and Winchester City Council for supporting this competition for Hyde Gate Club and for supplying the seeds, pots, certificates, and trophies as well as the very welcome cream tea. It was so nice to see such a lovely turnout and everyone enjoying themselves. The certificates and trophies were lovely and much appreciated by all the residents.

“It was especially nice that Vera won the award for the ‘Tallest Sunflower’ as it was her 90th birthday and I know she was quite overcome with the kindness shown to her.

“The enthusiasm for these events and kindness shown towards all our residents is always greatly appreciated.”

Jo Fletcher, Head of Engagement Osborne Property Services:

“We were pleased to co-ordinate and sponsor the Sunflower Competition as it creates an inclusive environment where friendships develop and provides a safe place where the group feel part of their community.”

Cllr. Paula Ferguson, Cabinet Member for Community and Housing said, ‘It’s wonderful to see some of our tenants really enjoying taking part in this special sunflower competition this year in memory of one of our much-loved residents who particularly enjoyed growing sunflowers. Our thanks go to Osbourne Property Services for supporting this special initiative and to the family who came to help judge the well-deserved winner.”
