Tracking your Projects Should be Effortless

If you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it, or so the saying goes. Which also means that if reporting is inconsistent, sporadic or difficult to interpret, then the ability to manage any project, or assess the effectiveness and value of a framework is compromised.

Keeping on top of progress, issues and risks is enough of a challenge when you have a linear project, executed by a single team who are all your employees. Large infrastructure projects typically have interdependent sub projects, multiple teams and complex supply chains. The potential to generate a mountain of data and reports is significant.

Some data will be critical information that a customer and the entire project team needs to know, some of it will be detail that only interests delivery teams on sub-projects. Filtering and presenting information so that everyone sees what they need without digging for it is essential. It’s also  just about impossible if all partners and subcontractors have their own reporting processes and formats, and their own vision of what success and value look like.

Accountability

With unified and streamlined reporting comes genuine accountability and a platform where goal sharing and collaboration can be meaningful.

The goal must be to ensure that all partners have the key information they need at their fingertips, any time and on any device. Exception reporting should then alert teams when anything is off track.

Modern collaborative tools and working in a BIM environment have the capabilities to bring greater control to complex projects. They can also capture detailed asset information for planning future interventions.

But these are just tools. They have to be used consistently by all partners, based on a common process designed around the reporting needs of the customer. The also have to be used within a collaborative culture where keeping everyone fully informed is a priority.

Managing information needs to be planned and directed as rigorously as any other aspect of the project.
