How to Guarantee Sustainability Outcomes From Education Construction

The education sector is leading the way in specifying sustainable construction methods and outcomes. But it’s not unusual for there to be a gap – sometimes a large one – between specified and real world performance.

As we move towards a net zero carbon future, eliminating this gap matters more than ever.

Predictable Outcomes

Modern education construction isn’t just about specifying better sustainability outcomes. What matters just as much is that outcomes are predictable and deliverable.

One effective safeguard is to use a systemised construction product with a high level of pre-manufactured content. Another is to choose design and construction partners that are used to working in this environment.

There’s a lot to learn when you make the transition from traditional to modern construction methods. The way you plan and execute projects is fundamentally different.

Sustainable Construction Track Record

Osborne has learned important lessons from each of the many projects delivered using modern offsite methods. These lessons help us deliver progressively better outcomes and fully understand the implications of decisions made during the design and build phases.

We know that substantial carbon savings are deliverable. Deploying modern construction methods on the project to create 93 new places for SEND students at Greenvale School in Lewisham made a 60% saving on operational carbon.

There are also major productivity benefits from using a manufactured construction approach. Adopting Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) for the construction of the new Greenford High School helped the project achieve a BREEAM Very Good rating while shaving 10 weeks off the programme and £90k from the budget.

The learning process experienced through successive sustainable school construction projects has been incorporated into Osborne’s InForm product for education construction. This uses standardised design elements and components to accelerate project delivery and guarantee sustainability outcomes.

InForm features the Innovaré SIP system that has been used on over 220 education projects. The number of unknown and variable elements is diminishing with each project we deliver, which is why we are able to offer complete confidence over carbon emissions and sustainability.
