How We Can Make the Construction Playbook Goals a Reality

The aims of the Construction Playbook include simplifying the development of the built environment by harnessing technology, innovation and Modern Methods of Construction (MMC). The purpose is to improve productivity and quality, deliver projects faster and create assets that work for people, communities and the environment.

The question is: what’s the best way to get from where we are to achieving those objectives?

That fairly simple statement above sums up a fundamental shift in how the construction sector delivers projects. It involves new ways of engaging with stakeholders and end users and the development of streamlined supply chains with specialist expertise – particularly in harnessing the full potential of MMC.

Building With MMC Is Different

Delivering projects using MMC is not like using traditional construction in many ways. For a lot of contractors this means an intensive education and reskilling programme that affects project managers, designers and QSs in particular.

Osborne has had a self-build MMC capability for over 12 years through our Innovaré subsidiary.  We have a wealth of first-hand experience of how the development process needs to adapt to make the most of the opportunity and deliver the Construction Playbook goals.

We also know how to deploy a platform-based approach to construction that blends standardisation and customisation to meet specific needs and helps deliver real-world carbon reduction.

Development Lifecycle

With such fundamental changes, the focus is inevitably on the design and build phases. But it also makes sense to look at the entire lifecycle to see how other elements can be simplified and de-risked.

Building in line with the Construction Playbook will result in high quality buildings that need less maintenance. Even so, efficiently run property services will still be important to achieve the best lifetime value.

Osborne has plenty of examples of how deploying innovation and technology in property services leads to a better experience for occupants as well as greater efficiency for asset owners. Most of these come from our social housing property services business but the lessons can be applied to any type of publicly funded assets, including hospitals, schools, prisons and ‘blue light’ facilities.

Fast tracking the Construction Playbook will be easier with partners that are already a substantial way along the learning curve. If you want to find out more about Osborne’s expertise contact Caroline Compton-James ([email protected]) or visit our resource centre.
