The UK needs to rapidly expand classroom capacity in the coming years. Achieving the ambitious targets will depend on innovative and trusted construction partners with a proven ability to deliver education buildings, school construction and classroom construction rapidly, cost-effectively and with minimal disruption to learning. Education remains one of our strongest sectors with over 50 projects completed in the last five years.

We work across all subsectors of education from Primary through to Higher. Our teams are adept at working in and around live environments – ensuring pupils and students can study and learn as normal and projects are delivered ready for new academic terms.

In the last five years, we have handed over 25 primary schools for the beginning of the September academic terms. Our approach is to be honest and open, to spend time observing the daily routines and to learn how we can minimise our presence once on site.

Where appropriate, we offer learning opportunities for pupils and students, inviting them on site tours, holding assemblies and carrying out work experience in the site office. One recent customer was so impressed with the performance of the project manager that they named their new teaching building after him.

Our customer offer:

  • Early engagement to deliver value by providing funding solutions, reducing programme timings and redesigning layouts to improve financial return.
  • A detailed understanding of the breadth of the education market and the nuances of each sector.
  • Delivering social value to benefit the local community.
  • We help customers maintain ‘business as usual’ when working within occupied sites.
  • Skills and experience from the wider Osborne business to offer innovative solutions such as off-site manufacture, and bringing expertise from our rail colleagues.
  • A product that is of exemplary quality; we build technically complex structures that inspire the students who use them.

“Osborne demonstrated a proactive and positive attitude to the needs of our school, local community and consultants, establishing excellent relationships with the Head Teacher and staff which was instrumental to the success of this project.” – Richard Sanderson, Lady Margaret School

Primary Education

Within the classroom, playground and the wider community, primary schools play a unique role in supporting children as they take their first steps on the road to learning and growing. We fully involve end users to ensure their design and functionality needs are met.

Secondary Education

Construction works in the secondary school environment are carried out with the utmost sensitivity to the needs of students, many of whom will be working towards examinations that will shape their future. Whether it is modernisation works or new build classrooms, we regularly liaise with the schools to ensure any potentially noisy works are carried out at suitable times.

We work with both private and public customers including Lady Margaret’s School, St Paul’s School, the London Borough of Ealing and Surrey County Council.

Special Education Needs

Pupils with learning and behavioural difficulties can find changes to their environment challenging. Our teams understand this and will go above and beyond for the pupils and staff to minimise the impact of any building programmes.

At Portesbery SEN School in Surrey the project manager invited six pupils to become part of a re-build team. They were involved in the design, quality of finishes and handover via monthly site visits. The pupils then reported back during school assemblies. The school won Best Inclusive Building at the LABC regional awards.

We also have involved pupils in daily site meetings, time capsule burials and digger rides to help their adjustment to the works.

Colindale College

Further Education

Many of the college buildings we deliver combine classrooms and lecture theatres with vocational workshops, flexible study areas, retail outlets and job and training centres.

This sector continues to evolve and grow as forward looking colleges adapt to achieve their wider ambitions. In the last five years we have worked on college construction projects with Barnet and Southgate College, Bexley College, Brighton and Hove City College and Chichester College.

Higher Education

In an increasingly competitive and open market, universities have to pay more attention than ever to the student experience as well as the learning environment. The property estate can play a huge part in supporting this by providing facilities for work, rest and leisure that help to attract students and increase university ranking scores.

Our recently completed higher education and university construction projects have included new build libraries and student services centres, student accommodation blocks and course-specific faculty buildings for Royal Holloway University of London and the Universities of Roehampton, Southampton and Greenwich.

We have been shortlisted for the Stirling Prize for two consecutive years for two higher education construction projects; London School of Economics Saw Swee Hock Student Centre (2013) and the University of Greenwich’s new library and School of Architecture (2014).
