Housing & the Net Zero Carbon Economy

The UK Government aims to achieve a net carbon zero economy by 2050. Some environmental groups argue that this needs to happen sooner. Either way, we can’t get there without addressing how we build new homes.

Around 15% of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions are already generated by households (Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy, Feb 2020). Meanwhile, there’s a target of building over 300,000 new homes each year in England.

How we build those homes will have a long-lasting impact on the UK’s progress towards becoming a zero carbon economy. Ensuring all of the new homes we build are ‘zero energy’ homes would significantly reduce future carbon emissions and energy costs.
