Local Jobs for Local People- the Benefit of Apprenticeships

Local Apprentices Will Kendall (18) and Dylan Hobbs (17) have celebrated the completion of their first six months of a two-year apprenticeship with Osborne Property Services, working for Winchester City Council.
The two, who live in the Winchester area, were selected for the apprenticeship programme in July last year after successfully making it through the group and individual interview stages.  After completing a one-month trial to make sure the role was right for them, they were both awarded full-time contracts in August.

The Maintenance Operations apprenticeship, provides apprentices with the opportunity to try out a range of skills and provides a solid platform for further, more specialist training.  Will and Dylan attend Eastleigh College two days a week, where they are learning a range of construction skills, including painting and decorating, plastering, plumbing, carpentry and brickwork.

Dylan commented “I like doing different things at college like plastering.  I’ve got my own tools now.”

Osborne’s Training and Development Coordinator, Caz Callam, explains “Apprenticeships are an important part of what we are able to offer local people as part of our long term contracts.  As well as providing employment opportunities and developing skills, apprentices also give us a pool of talent to recruit from in the future.  This is especially important with the shortage of skilled tradespeople within the industry.  So as far as we’re concerned it’s a win-win situation.”

As part of the programme, Osborne Property Services have also worked closely with sub-contractors Marnall Heating and Ventilation and Premier Property Services to provide further opportunities for the apprentices.

Osborne is a member of The 5% Club, a campaign focused on creating momentum behind the recruitment of apprentices and graduates into the UK workforce.
With a creative and supportive family culture, they continue to seek out and encourage the next generation of industry innovators and leaders.  By joining The 5% Club, Osborne are publicly committing to the aim of ensuring that at least 5% of their workforce are apprentices, graduates or sponsored students on structured programmes within the next five years.
