Osborne Shortlisted for RIBA Stirling Prize Second Year in a Row

Every year the RIBA Stirling Prize is presented to the architects of a building which has made the greatest contribution to the evolution of architecture over the past 12 months.

Osborne is delighted to announce that their Stockwell Street development for the University of Greenwich has been shortlisted for the RIBA Stirling Prize 2015. This follows on from their 2014 Shortlisting for O’Donnell & Tuomey’s Saw Swee Hock student centre for the London School of Economics (LSE).

Designed by Heneghan Peng architects and built by Osborne, Stockwell Street extends the university into the heart of Greenwich and creates a landmark within its World Heritage Site. The £80million building houses the university’s main research and study library, as well as the Department of Architecture & Landscape, and the Department of Creation Professions and Digital Arts.

Stockwell Street saw the first students begin using the new facilities in autumn last year, and was officially opened in December 2014 by First Secretary of State, Rt Hon William Hague MP.

Stirling judges praised the University of Greenwich development’s “frisky gravitas”, its “remarkable” acoustics, and windows that had been “carefully considered to take advantage of key views, vistas and reflections”.

Last summer, as Osborne rebranded to a vibrant pink, it was also the only regional contractor in the running to be shortlisted for its work at LSE. They delighted their customer for hitting the spot when they undertook the incredibly ambitious development which aimed to meet LSE’s specification for “nothing less than the best student centre in the world” to enhance the student experience in central London.
