Osborne supporting free BIM training for SMEs

Osborne has become the first main contractor to support a new initiative that is providing free building information modelling (BIM) training for small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs).

The programme, called ‘Future Fit Built Assets’, is run by SECBE, the regional partner of Constructing Excellence for London and the South East. With part-funding from the European Regional Development Fund 2007-2013, the SECBE team has worked with Osborne to identify core members of their supply chain to receive BIM training. These organisations will participate in six classes over the next six months delivered by SECBE’s support partners.

Osborne’s BIM Champion, Fred Mills, praised the opportunity: “Engaging in this programme was a no-brainer for us. It is a great way to up-skill our supply chain on project procurement and delivery through a BIM processĀ”.

Main contractors and other organisations like Osborne are able to tailor the training to suit their business needs. Fred continued: “We have worked closely with SECBE to develop a programme that is bespoke to us; our culture, our workload and our processes. That approach as opposed to generic training really raised the value proposition”.

The first action learning set of Osborne’s programme is on 11 December at their Head Offices in Reigate. Eight SMEs are scheduled to attend the highly focused session.

Group Director of Design and IT, Rennie Chadwick, explained the long term benefits of supporting such a programme: “We’re anticipating a shift in the way we deliver projects over the next few years and are already building on our BIM pilots as a business. We need our supply chains support to further compound our service offering and deliver all our projects through a BIM approach. We are aspiring to make BIM second nature and part of the DNA of our business; that will benefit us and our Customers”.
