Playing our Part- Talent Spotting and Transforming Lives

Next year the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) will be 200 years old and to mark this momentous occasion there will be many events run throughout the year.
Safia Whitwham, a graduate engineer at Osborne, has become part of the London ICE 200 Oversight group; who will help plan and organise London’s programme of events throughout 2018.

Safia will be part of the group, which sports other industry heavyweights, such as Atkins and Skanska. Safia will be integral to generating ideas for activities, events and media content as well as assisting in the organisation of venues and speakers.

The events will focus on how civil infrastructure transforms peoples’ lives and encouraging the next generation into the profession.

Safia was instrumental to an event last year which brought together 20 graduates, students and technicians, to discuss the theme of “Career Opportunities” and routes to becoming a Civil Engineer.

As “Vice Chair – Membership” for the ICE London Graduate and Students Committee, Safia was fortunate enough to be given a place at the roundtable discussion with the President of the Institution of Civil Engineers, Sir John Armitt.

Osborne is keen to spread the word and share experience to encourage and keep the best talent in the industry. It has recently announced it will be opening its doors at two of its construction sites in Brighton and London, at this year’s National Open Doors Event.

Open Doors events across the country will see construction companies opening some of their sites for the general public to take a “behind the scenes” look and to ask those who make it happen, all about what they do. Aimed at demonstrating the diversity of the construction industry to those who may be looking to pursue a career in construction, or who just have a genuine interest in the work behind the hoardings, this is a unique opportunity for Osborne to showcase their work.
The event takes place on Monday 27th March until Saturday 1st April 2017.
