Wardalls Grove shortlisted for Sustainable Housing Award

Wardalls Grove, a new 124 home residential development in New Cross, Lewisham, has been shortlisted for a 2013 Sustainable Housing Award in the Sustainable Larger New Housing Project of the Year category.

Designed by bptw partnership and built by Osborne, Wardalls Grove comprises 124 affordable homes and was commissioned as an important strategic development for Hyde Housing to inform their energy and sustainability approach for future sites.

Built on a derelict brownfield site which required decontamination, the development reduces site wide carbon emissions by 20% achieved primarily through enhanced passive improvements.

The new units are built to Level 4 on the Code for Sustainable Homes, with two units being built to the Passivhaus standard. These units are currently being benchmarked against other homes on site which utilise a range of renewable energy and water saving technologies including photovoltaic panels, air and ground source heat pumps, and whole house heat recovery ventilation. The development also boasts green roofs which slow the run-off of surface water and promote biodiversity.

Wardalls Grove was also chosen for demonstrating strong green values through efficient construction and waste reduction, effective resident and community training, minimising traffic, improving the natural habitat, and providing numerous benefits to the surrounding area

The awards, organised by Inside Housing magazine, put the spotlight on the best green social housing projects constructed in the UK and the organisations responsible for them. Trophies will be presented at a ceremony hosted by the award winning stand-up comedian, TV and radio regular Josie Long on Friday 18 October at the Lancaster London Hotel.
